Style With Substance..
A euphoric
blend of uplifting house and the undulating rhythm of a kicking beat.
This is the only way to describe the sound that emanates from the
pulsating speakers that are at the mercy of one of the most up and coming
DJ's that Manchester has to offer. His name is Rick Cee and he has transformed
funky house Djing and made it into a fine art.
What was once a city living in the depression years that followed the closure
of the most infamous night club in the history of Britain, the Hacienda, now
it is reinstating itself as a centre of international clubbing excellence. Not
since the long gone (and most probably completely forgotten!) daze of the 1990's
has Manchester reached such an optimum level where clubber's unite to share in
an amazing experience that has become standard in this bustling town.
It is within these endless streets that the DJ Rick Cee has found a platform
to display his unique talents on the turntable. A master of his art, Rick Cee
attracts young people from around the North West to experience his magic as he
plays the most recent in funky house tunes and combines them with a superb individuality
that is completely his own.
Style with substance is a phrase that comes to mind when encountering a night
that he is present at, as his combination of smooth sophistication blends beautifully
with his outstanding mixing capabilities and reaches to the very depths of the
soul. The effect is truly inspirational, arousing feelings that could transform
even the most fanatic fans of any other genre of music to become committed funky
house lovers.
Rick Cee has been laying the foundations of his prodigy for the past six years
and he is slowly setting standards that other hopeful DJ's could only wish to
aspire to. Three deck mixing with a range of FX units has become one of his specialities
and he is currently composing masterpieces behind the scenes too. Before every
set he creates his own acapella's as individual as the nights that he plays at.
It all began back in 1993, when Rick Cee was a mere twelve years old. Back then
he claims his main influences were Jeremy Healy and Graham Park and it was whilst
listening to these masters at work that he decided that if there was not room
for him amongst the best, he would make room.
Rick Cee purchased his first set of decks in 1994 and by 1997 he was playing
the main room at Fluid in Manchester and it was there amongst the elated dancers
that the DJ bug took hold of him completely leading to a chain of events that
catapulted him into the club scene.
Over the next six years, Rick Cee saw his life change to a nocturnal existence
that spanned the length and breadth of the NorthWest. From Garlands in Liverpool
to Sankey's in Manchester, from Venus in the City to 2Risque, Rick Cee has demonstrated
his aptitude at an alarmingly high level, which has always remained exceptional.
He boasts a long list of DJ's that he has played along side including The AudioWhores
and Jason Herd and in summer of 2002, his reputation crossed the continent when
he was asked to headline at a nightclub in Ibiza.
"
To be a good DJ is more than to simply play tunes that the club wants to hear," he
began, "It would be easy to just walk into a club and play popular music
and yeah, everyone would love you for it, but to be a good DJ you need individuality
and your own style. You can't buy that from a record shop."
And style is what he has. Style and substance. A rare combination of attributes
that is seldom found in a world where everyone wants to be a DJ. On that
matter he added "Anyone can play records like anyone can kick a ball.
It takes skill, preparation and pure dedication to score a goal."
Words cannot describe the skill that is exhibited when Rick Cee is on the decks.
It is one that needs to be experienced first hand to appreciate fully and the
only advice could be to witness it for yourself.
